God Save Pussy Riot

Vladimir Putin has proven once again that he is nothing but a mean-spirited thug. Luckily I live in the United States of America where we cling to a smattering of civil liberties. Freedom of expression is one of our most coveted rights. The three young women of the punk rock band, Pussy Riot (ain’t that great?) were today sentenced to two years in prison for expressing their opinion of Vlad. In the new Russia, post-Yeltsin, that’s a big no-no. That Putin would react to these young women in this way indicates a gross level of insecurity. That Putin is so popular with the Russian people says a lot, in my opinion, of the Russian people.

The revolution that brought down Communism in the Soviet Union was an implosion of the Communist Party. Its inability to deal with the problems of the Soviet Union caused them to fall. There was no great uprising of the people, except for Ukrainians, Estonians, Latvians, etc. who seized the chance to escape from the horrors of Russian occupation. I don’t claim to be an expert on Russian history; however, the Russian people do seem to display untoward affection to despotic, megalomaniacal leaders who crush the citizenry. First there’s Ivan the Terrible who beat his son to death. Then there’s Peter the Great who had his son beaten to death. Let’s not forget Stalin who wiped out millions of his own people in the same systematic way that Hitler killed Jews. Stalin is a beloved figure to millions of Russians. But what about Alexander the Second who freed the serfs? He was assassinated.

Alexander II – murdered

Vladimir Putin – murderer

Pro-Pussy Riot protesters were arrested outside of the courthouse when the verdict was announced. That’s how they do things in an authoritarian regime. The police are a net to gather up dissenters and people who don’t fit in. They deliver them to the authorities who in turn torture, imprison and murder them.

About Russell Smith

I was born at the American Hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. I find inspiration in the lives of so many people from Joan of Arc to Oscar Wilde. While my primary avocation is photography, I also enjoy philosophy, theology and most of all, history. My beloved wife, Robin Anne Smith, who passed away in 2013 is also an inspiration to me. My beloved partner, Dana is also a great support and inspiration to me. I'd be remiss if I did not mention my cats: Natasha, Maxwell, Tigger and Nigel.
